From 25 to 35 on ACT English:
    Ellah's Score-Raising Journey

Ellah raised her ACT English from a 25 to a 35 in FOUR practice tests. Here's our interview with her.

What do you think was different back when you got your 25 compared to where you are now at 35?

Ellah:  When I got a 25 at the beginning, it was a lot of just going with my gut, like, “Does this sound right or does this not sound right?” And looking through the answers and picking the one that sounded best. But not really thinking about any rules or anything, because I didn’t know any of them yet.

Now that I've done the cards more, I recognize where the flashcards come up in the questions.

Now it’s not as much guessing and using my gut, but [instead] going through the thought processes in the flashcards, and developing my reasoning.

People want to have the 10-point jump that you’ve had - what advice would you give them?

Ellah:  When you first see a huge pile of grammar flashcards, it looks scary, and intimidating, and like a lot of work.

But going in the smaller increments that I’ve been doing it - like five one day, and then reviewing them all the next day - it’s really not that much at all.

It actually doesn’t take me as long, especially now as I’m really starting to know the questions.

Now I kind of go through it faster than I expected.

I feel like it’s a lot easier than you think.

What has been the effect of doing one-on-one tutoring with us as you learn the cards?

Ellah:  There’s a difference between knowing the flashcards and actually being able to apply them to the test and identify the type of the question even when you know all the flashcards.

There’s a step in between that’s harder. So going through those questions and the times when I didn’t recognize what question it was, or what step to take, I think it’s helpful to go over that part together with my tutor.
